Barton

Situated near Capital Hill, the suburb of Barton was once one of Australia’s most privileged suburbs. It is surrounded by the neighbouring suburbs of Kingston, Parkes, and Forrest. It is named after Sir Edmund Barton, Australia’s first prime minister, who remained in office for four years. Although there is little commercial space, there are some amenities that attract a wide range of people.

The district is mostly residential with few commercial areas. Located at the east end of Lake Burley Griffin, Barton is home to ACT Hospice. The Charles Sturt University Canberra campus, an Anglican seminary, is also located in Barton. The Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture is located next door. Other notable institutions in the district include the Australian Federal Police College and Telopea Park School. Former Prime Minister Ben Chifley once favoured a pub in the area, Hotel Kurrajong.
