Is Your Child Suffering From A Dental Emergency? Follow This Guide On What To Do Next

Children are less likely to manage dental pain and the role of the parent is essential to make sure you reduce your child’s pain from an emergency. Accidents can occur at any time, whether you’re an adult or a child. However, the effects on a child’s mouth from an accident could halt the healthy growth of milk teeth. Therefore, it is important you act immediately if your child is in oral pain. Knowing what to do can be the difference between saving your child’s teeth and serious damage to their happy smile.

Here, we take a look at the three most common dental emergencies and what you need to do. Whilst you must contact your dentist as soon as possible in every case, it is important you understand other remedies to limit your child’s pain.

The Three Common Child Dental Emergencies

  1. If A Milk Tooth Is Knocked Out – There is a chance that your child will suffer from heavy bleeding from a knocked-out tooth. Immediately rinse the water out with lukewarm water and use a gauze pad where the wound opens to limit any bleeding. Also, look at placing a cold compress to the cheek to reduce swelling. Permanent teeth usually grow underneath, so never put the tooth back in place.
  2. If A Milk Tooth Is Chipped Or Broken – When a tooth is chipped, the milk teeth is so small that the crack could be severe. An infection could spread rapidly. Rinse the mouth with lukewarm water and a cold compress immediately to limit the swelling. The child may also experience some trauma. It is important that you calm your child down with their favorite toy and some happy thoughts.
  3. If Your Child Is Complaining Of Toothache – The reasons why a child complains of pain in their mouth can be many. A pediatrician will be able to determine the concern quickly within an appointment. Ask your child if they’re experiencing any earache. You may also use lukewarm water to rinse the mouth to clear any debris. You must not use any form of aspirin.

Precautions To Avoid A Child’s Dental Emergency

Take these precautions to avoid any unnecessary accidents and damage to their teeth. As children, teeth can be used for many unusual things. It is important that they understand that their teeth must be looked after.

  • Avoid biting on anything other than food. Do not use teeth to open packaging or tight bottle caps, for example.
  • Advise children not to run around with objects in their mouth. An accident could cause severe dental damage.
  • Regularly book your child into the dentist every 6 months.
  • Educate your child early on why looking after teeth is important, and how to do it.
